Norfolk Snowboarders bring home the medals at the English Cross Championships 2019

With the winter season’s snowboard training coming to an end, it was now time... to put the training into practice. Roll on the English Ski and Snowboard Cross championship 2019!

This years team, consisting of Andy Knowles, Finlay Knowles, Rodney Harmer, Jamie Halliday, Freya Savage, Matt Savage, Rubin Perkins and Coach Piers Lincoln made their way from the sleepy hollows of Norfolk to the indoor snow dome ‘Snozone’ situated outside the town of Castleford.

After arriving the day before, it was a case of adorning our snowboarding gear and getting some early practice on the course. With many features only available on real snow, such as giant rollers, patches of ice and banked ‘burns’ of snow, our riders felt daunted by the course. However, with only a handful of training runs and a bit of coaching, all adapted to these challenges and started flying down the course with both style and speed.

The next day saw an early start. The team made their way across to the dome in a scene reminiscent to Reservoir Dogs, all in their snowboard gear and with snowboards in hand. We met fellow Norfolk rider and current English Champion Kyle Wise on the slope and were now ready for battle. With only 45 minutes of warm up time on this freshly groomed and re-shaped course, it was race time all too soon.

As the juniors were soon out of the gate, it was onto the Masters. First up was Piers Vs Jamie. With the start Marshall calling out ‘Riders Ready……Attention……GO!’, we were off! Out of the gate, over the two rollers at the start, into the burns, turning right and then left. Now dropping into the first straight, over the giant roller then into another set of burns. Left then right and onto the final straight and across the finish line with a jump to end in style. It seemed to last only a few seconds but was the most intense few seconds one could experience.

Next up, Andy Vs Matt. Again, with the call of ‘Go…..’, both men pulled on the starting gate with all their might and launched themselves onto the course. Again, a fantastically close race and a win to Andy.

Before long, it was time for the grudge match following on from last year between Jamie and Rodney. With their matching orange snowboard pants, they both prepared themselves in the gate. ‘Go…’, and they were away. Over the rollers, through the burns, down the straight and across the line. This year, it was Rodney’s turn to win as he crossed the line just slightly ahead of Jamie.

Fighting in the ‘Open’ Category`, we had Kyle Wise defending his title against the likes of Finlay Knowles and Christie Fierman. We all stood and watched, with anticipation and Kyle and Christie prepared themselves in the gate. As Christie had just won at the recent Brits 2019 Snowboard cross races in Laax, we knew it would be close. ‘Go…..’, and they were off! Kyle was first into the burn but with Christie so close, snowboards clattered and Kyle was knocked from his feet. Christie took this opportunity and sped round him to take victory….a victory which would later gain him the title.

Finally, it was the grudge match to decide the final places of the Open category. Christie Fierman Vs Finlay Knowles, who had recently won second place at the Brits 2019, mounted the starting gate. With everyone watching on in silence, the shout of ‘Go…’, and the boys were off. Neck and neck into the first burn, this time it was Christie who was sent flying as Finlay held his line through the burns. With parents and coaches alike cheering him on, it was Finlay who secured the win.

Fighting for the win, our female racer, Freya Savage who was still carrying a minor knee injury battled fearlessly against very stiff competition, winning two of her races and securing a third place in her category. With a few slams along the way, she bravely hobbled up to the podium to collect her medal.

With so many closely run races, many of the riders finished their races with equal points which, with no more time left to race again meant that the finally positions were based on the results of earlier races. e.g in the event of a draw, the results of the earlier race between racer 1 and racer 2 would be used to decide the outcome. With so many podium places, it is clear that our Norfolk Snowboard Race Team are a force to be reckoned with…..

    Female Under 16

    3rd Place - Freya Savage

    Masters

Joint 2nd place - Rodney Harmer and Andy Knowles

Open and therefore English Champions 2019

    3rd place - Finlay Knowles
    2nd place - Kyle Wise

With the English Champs now completed, it is time to prepare for the next event which is the Ski-X / Board-X Round 2 Cross event to be held in Norfolk on the 28th of September.
